The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the fact that our neighbors’ well-being matters to each and every one of us. It is time to implement a Universal Basic Income (UBI) to raise up every American and create a more stable and just economy.

Not only is UBI a more efficient way to eliminate homelessness and hunger, but it also has the effect of stabilizing our economy. After decades of decrying any financial help for American workers, Congress ‘found’ trillions of dollars this year to bail out hand-picked corporations and industries. And while the pandemic has created special circumstances, it makes the most sense going forward to put that money in the hands of the People. People will spend money on the goods and services that keep our economy flowing. UBI is the mechanism by which, during this pandemic, we can avoid a Depression.

Over 30 million people have filed for unemployment due to the COVID-19 pandemic. With those jobs went their healthcare and ability to purchase from businesses. The virus is not going away any time soon, and we need to protect our people – especially our most vulnerable – while working to lift the economy that really matters. A Universal Basic Income is the most efficient way of doing that. Furthermore, UBI is consistent with the principles of the Green New Deal and, along with universal health care, will raise our entire country up to a brighter future together.
